At the peak of the Jura distillery's core range (relaunched in mid-2018) sits the Isle of Jura 18 Year Old. This expression aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux barrels, imparting a rich fruitiness. Top stuff for late evening dramming.
Cinnamon, dried berries, Wine Gums, hickory.
Brandied cherries, Turkish delight, milky coffee and blackcurrant jam.
Chocolate chip cookies, a touch of hay, orange oil.
Got a good batch. Very oaky and smooth and really easy to drink. albeit the 21 is too similar in taste to recommend over the 18 but i've heard jura varies depending on the batch
OMG is this disappointing, for double+ the price of Jura's reliably good 10 year old. Suspiciously grappa-esque nose leads right into a rough, vegetal palate. Sure, there are some sweet notes, caramel, etc., but unbalanced and a bitter finish. Definite oxidized wine cork in there, too. I fully agree with the other 1-star reviews -- "No. Just no", "Oh dear - oh dear …", "Finished? Don't Get Me Started!" -- all call it right. That is to say, Jura 18 is wrong, very wrong. And a rip-off as well.
I give it 2.5 stars because for an 18 year old whisky, it is priced reasonably. But in terms of the quality of the whisky I can't help but feel that I'm being overly generous. I'm not saying it tastes bad, in fact I could possibly stretch to describing it as fairly pleasant. Put bluntly, the most remarkable thing about this whisky is how unremarkable they've made it - for an 18 year old to be this uninteresting is quite a feat. Perhaps if Jura stopped releasing so many variations of their whisky with most appealing to the mass market and instead focused on releasing quality ones then this may be a different story. They have quality whisky to offer - hopefully we can taste it one day.
Nice thing, considering the price. Just a bit sweet and a bit smoky. Smooth.
Absolute cracker....?
