At the peak of the Jura distillery's core range (relaunched in mid-2018) sits the Isle of Jura 18 Year Old. This expression aged in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Premier Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux barrels, imparting a rich fruitiness. Top stuff for late evening dramming.
Cinnamon, dried berries, Wine Gums, hickory.
Brandied cherries, Turkish delight, milky coffee and blackcurrant jam.
Chocolate chip cookies, a touch of hay, orange oil.
My favourite introduced to me a few years ago as a thank you for conducting A funeral! My go to single malt when time to Relax and enjoy it.
Rather good this one, never tried Jura before this one.Present from a family member.I like it...complex due to 18 years maturation!
Let me start by saying that I quite liked Jura 16. I was sad to see it go, but hearing there would be a bit more peat reek in the new line I was hopeful as I like a bit of reek in a dram. I was not certain that the "Grand Cru" red wine casks in this expression would be noticeable, but they certainly were. Sadly, that ended up being unfortunate. It creates a taste I think can best be described as if someone had pulled a prank on you by soaking red wine corks in your whisky, but only those from wine where the cork had gone off. It is very clear why other distilleries do not use red wine casks as a standard. None of the wonderful and unique spice and flavour I associate with Jura shows through here. This is also less smooth than I would expect for an 18 yo, even at the nicer 44% at which it is bottled. I try to do my research before any whisky purchases, so I rarely end up with bottles I hate. Here I did none because I liked their 16 so much. That was a mistake. I am not sure what to do with the rest of the bottle.
Jura is my personal favorite, the 16 “Diurach’s Own” and 21 year old expressions being tops for me and the 12 year old “Elixir” being a regular tipple for me, when I can get it. I just tried the new 12 and 18 year old and they are a little different flavour. There is something similar to the Brooklyn in them. I like them but they have a little more sweetness than my older favorites.
Great stuff
