Scotch that snobs love to hate

Got a bottle expecting nothing. Surprised to find a mix of flavors that can rival Teacher's at this price point. The young grain whisky in there is alcoholic, feisty and a bit too hot on the palate. However, there is also a pleasant sweetness, a hint of spice and just enough delicious peat that the half-star reviewers here can tell you that it tastes like burnt rubber. The finish is quite dry, short and slightly sour/bitter but not in a way that I find off-putting. At the price point, I wouldn't say it's the obvious choice, as Jameson and Teacher's are very decent blends, but it has enough character to make me buy a bottle once in a while.

    Red direction

December/2020 bottle; Better than what I remember. Pretty good even.

    Moving in the red direction

I buy a bottle of this once a year to taste if the blend changed in comparison to how I remember it. I must say that it’s better than I expected. A little edgy, but not “off”. Watery, but pretty soft arrival, descent spiciness, caramel, bit of honey and woodiness.. oh, and a bit of Islay bite! While it’s not better than Teachers, it’s good nonetheless. It doesn’t even need much water. Pretty good stuff! To my tastebuds most of the bottom shelve whisky’s are moving in the right direction lately. Maybe it’s just me.. or maybe it’s because of the change in the way whisky advertises to the public. Less tv commercials against more user reviews and the transparency of the internet. If Johnnie Walker Red wants to remain the big selling bottom shelf blend it always was, it has to back it up.. and it does.

Add a bit of water to take the edge off

No it isn't nice neat, no cheap blends are and most whiskies aren't the best without having about 25%-30% water added. Add that amount of water to your glass and it makes it a smoother drink and you get a bit of toffee and light peaty flavours. Decent entry whisky, just don't pay more than Teachers

    Valuse for money

I would say it is value for money. You are not getting something like Laphroaig but at this price, it provides a rich taste with a hint of smoke. I specially like its finish, which is surprisingly better and longer than I expected in the price range.
