    Johnnie Walker Double Black

Originally released to the travel retail market, Double Black combines the rich, malty flavour of Black Label with slightly peatier whisky and casks that were more heavily charred. The result is a toasty, smoky whisky with Johnnie Walker's usual rich, malty core.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Slightly smoky and almost medicinal on the nose, it offers up hints of vanilla, a little tar, a touch of barbecue sauce, citrus and malt.

    Palate

Good body and very creamy with a sublimely malty core. It offers up a surprising level of peat smoke which works really well. Creamy sweetness, hints of soft wood smoke, salty butter, custard and cereal grains.

    Finish

Good length with notes of malt, boiled sweets, black pepper and cool smoke.

It's just not for me because of the after effects

I like the flavor, but too much smoke after taste and it lingered far to long for me. And to make matters worse one drink gave me a massive headache. I've had other liquor do the same thing but not to the extent this did. I guess I'll stick Mccallen. I've had blue label before with no such I'll side effects lol

    Nice

Very much what it says on the tasting notes!

    Smooth, pleasant whisky

Much better than I expected. This is a very nice whisky. Compared to some single malts such as glenlivet 15 or balvennie 14, which I find a bit harsh and 1 dimensional, this is very smooth, with nice elements of figs, toffee and smoke, with an underlying sweetness (treacle/raisins) being carried through and a nice hint of complexity. There definitely seems to be an element of talisker coming through on this 1. Very easy to drink. At £30 it's hard to fault. In fact when you think talisker skye its self is £40, I would rate this higher than that.

just doesnt stack up for the brand

I never really understood why this one can be found in many stores and yet the far better green not so much at all. And even the controversial (though fav of mine) new Gold reserve harder to find as well. I never did get what JW was going for here. I really just beleive the successful and popular Black is the only reason this so called "double" version is so easily available. Its really just not so good. It is nothing imo like black and it cannot at all stand up to original black, nor the great Green nor the Controversial Gold. This one imo is more of a gimmick than it is anything else. Imo its making its living simply by using the Black name. Many folks (non Scotch drinkers) tend to buy this as a gift for thier Scotch drinking buddies or family members as though more a novelty thing. Its like ..."well I know he likes Black , so double black must be a nice gift". Sorry , but its not...lol. This is disappointing, too smokey, and not so pleasant to sip as others from JW. I just dont see why this took off and how its even still around and lasted as long as it has. Somebody still buying it so it must be working for someone. That being said,....somewhere is the worst Doctor and yet someone has an appointment with him tomorrow. Sorry JW,...Im a believer in the brand with the exception of Red (but red is what it is) and this one should imo simply disappear. Much rather see more shelves with green and Gold on them next to the original and always delicious Black. This one imo just kind of a gimmick. Ill give it 2 stars simply because its drinkable enough. But thats all.
