South African single grain whisky! How often do you see that? "Not often" is the answer, and the question was rhetorical so... Anyway, released in 2009, this is South Africa's first ever single grain whisky, coming from the The James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington. Bain's Cape Mountain whisky is produced in column stills, matured in first fill bourbon casks for five years and named after the chap who built the first roads in Wellington.
Nose: Grapefruit peels, custard creams and icing sugar. Soon followed by almost-bourbon-like-buttered corn notes and a floral hint of bluebells giving it a lightness throughout.
Palate: Soft and well-rounded with continued vanilla cream. Fresh pear and fizzy apple laces give it a fruity edge. Cardamom builds as does the warming, oaky warmth.
Finish: The sweet citrus peels return, along with a little bit of meadowsweet.

Overwhelming sweetness, 2 stars for interesting, birthday cake too much icing

Daughters partner from Mozambique bought me this for Christmas as a taste of Africa as he knows I have a wide selection of whiskey from around the world. It is a worthy adition to my collection. A nice carmal taste with a slightly sharp finish but a nice aftertaste.

Want to try it can't get it

Excellent smooth , as a good single grain should be. My new favourite!!!

I be drinking scotch for a few years now, and this one is the rarest of all. It taste like a better version of Captain Morgan rum. I agree, not a $35 whisky.

It's a very smooth, easy to drink whisky but has a very organic, earthy taste to it. Being so used to W.L. Weller and other various higher quality American bourbons as well as a few decent single malt scotches, it almost tasted to me like the equivalent of a home-distilled whiskey distilled with rain water, if that makes any sense. It's very light and smooth, but it lacks the character that I'm used to with upper-shelf whiskies. I paid $29.99 for a bottle of it to try it but I don't plan on buying it again, except for maybe for a friend from South Africa, purely as a nostalgic gift.

Mothers milk in a glass bottle. Better than majority imported dops.

This stuff is just as good as the Koval whiskey I buy for special occasions. $24.99 at Sam's club, it's litterally 1/2 the price. An incredible value for someone who really appreciates a nice, smooth whisky for sipping.

Drink it now. You are sure to love it. Do not mix it IMO. Neat or on the rocks.

Used to live in SA and love the brandy. Got this as a Christmas present and love it. I am a big scotch person and could be happy with this neat all night. Probably best to keep it for special occasions (when I don't have guests!)

A SPECIAL WHISKEY. WHEN YOU DRINK AS MUCH AS I DO YOU HAVE TO DRINK KEENLY PRICED WHISKEYS DURING THE WEEK. BUT THIS IS A FANTASTIC TREAT AT A SENSIBLE PRICE. VERY SMOOTH WITH A LIGHT TOFFEE FINISH. A MUST BUYJELLY

A very smooth and well balanced whisky. I found it compares very well to some of my favorite bourbons, but offers a slightly more mellow and sweeter finish due it's corn base and double maturing process.

Ever since I tried it, its been my go to whisky. Always surprisingly delicious after having other similarly priced whiskies which fail to match it on taste and and sheer enjoyment!

Ever so smoooth! An absolute delight. Prefer it over Scotch

I tried this Whisky on recommendation. I wasn't let down, smooth nectar, had to hide it away - will buy again - a steal. I rate tough and give it 8.5/10. Note, I haven't found a 9 yet!

Just to say, I love whisky, however let me add in the same breath I'm no fancy connoisseur but have tasted in excess of 150 different types and this is really worth adding to your pallet memory.

...you buy it in South Africa! Good whisky but the price abroad is silly. Served it to two friends who like whisky and they appreciated the taste and the colour but the 'nose' is rather flat.

Tastes like the Fountain of Life.

I have been establishing a collection of whisky with 30/40 bottles for 2 years now, I decided to try out this bottle for sentimental value to reminis my days of living in Africa, and I was actually blown away but how lovely it is!This is has the same sort of flavor as a good bourbon, but in my opinion it is better than most. Very smooth, not overpowering, amazing sweet smell, addictively good tasting, and great for drinking neat.I will even go as far as saying the flavour is far better than the majority of scotch, and as a scotch fanatic that has cut me deeply to say it. I definitely recommend it. I can't recommend it enough. Tried it with a friend who also remarked on its incredibility. I am quite floored by this experience.

After a 10 year absence I paid a visit to my home country being spoiled for choice with all the Scottish whiskey's, and I have tried a fair few. My friend works in the food industry and she said I should try it. Needles to say this was my whisky of choice for the holiday. And certainly value for money. Smuggled about 6 bottles back to share with friends. Try it and you will be pleasantly surprised it will knock your socks off.

This is a surprise. A delightfully smooth whiskey and I understand it has won a number of awards. I am not usually influenced by such awards but this one is definitely deserved. A lovely whiskey and one that even a Malt devotee should try ... And then keep in his whiskey cabinet!
