The Fat Trout is a three-year-old blended Scotch, produced by Ian Macleod "By appointment to the enthusiastic flyfishers of the world", according to the label. A dram of whisky is surely the perfect way to wind down after a day of wading around in a river, and hopefully, celebrate a successful catch or two.
Thankfully no fish here, but there are delicate layers of fruit and heather followed by biscuity malt, vanilla, and a whisper of smoke.
Orange marmalade and a touch of bitter pith are balanced by vanilla and dried apricot while prickles of pepper and cinnamon develop alongside that peat smoke from the nose.
Drying spice, coffee grounds, cocoa, and candied orange.
