Single Malt
Highland Park
Scotland
A incredibly good whisky which was launched in March 2010 for the travel retail market, Highland Park Leif Eriksson was released to celebrate the first European to reach America over a thousand years ago. They make this whisky in bourbon and American oak sherry casks and the results are delicious.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Spicy and sweet, floral, perfumed and malty, vanilla fudge and oak. Applewood and chocolate orange.
Vanilla and nectarine, juicy fruit, popcorn and heather, a ting of gentle woodsmoke.
Demerara rum, nutmeg and spices, a touch of coffee and gentle woodsmoke.
Loved it, hp is always a winner for me
I dont blame Highland Park going for the airport trade American market at all, but I just found this disappointing
I'm very familiar with the HP range and tend to go for the 18 and 25yo as a staple in my cabinet. Decided to try this on a whim as it was something different and it's unexpectedly nice. At first I found the sweetness on the nose overpowering, but after letting it breathe, I found it to be a surprisingly moreish malt. Certainly made me have more of an appreciation for whiskies with no age statement.
It's overpriced, but let it breath (lidded) for half an hour, it really opens up into a beautiful ethereal complex whisky.
I bought the Leif E edition in a moment of weakness. I could not recall the rating or review in my M J Companion, however I am a Fan of the HP 12 and the 18, and thought I was pretty well protected by the HP branding. Sadly I found this Leif E edition flat, lacking in the depth and not even close to the HP 12yr. I felt it was more an average American bourbon, than a Scottish single malt, and that was before I had done any reading or research. Not that I mind American whiskey's now and again; however at the price, I was truly expecting a more weighty palate and stronger smoother finish. A 79 is lavish for this spirit, but I am only an armchair sipper!
