The first release in a series from Highland Park launched in 2017, The Dark is a 17 year old single malt which has been drawn from European oak Sherry-seasoned casks. A fantastic example of how blending Sherried richness with elegant smoky elements can work spectacularly.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Cinnamon sticks, pine and ginger, with layers of chocolate-chip cookie dough and fruitcake bringing sweetness.
Plump raisins and roasted coffee beans, with light wisps of heather-y smoke appearing later on.
Mint chocolate ice cream, prunes, almonds and forest floor richness.
Excellent
Great whisky!!! It is what the 18 years old "viking pride" should have tasted like, but unfortunately it has become a disgrace in recent years. This 17 years old is what Highland Park is really all about... too bad they care more about marketing these days than whisky
Like a very nice overpriced whisky - with extra sherry finish and smokiness. At £190 it is 'a steal' - you decide who is robbing who.
Like having a dram of Mac 18 Sherry Cask with a little dash of peat/smoke infusion. As Mac 18 is my benchmark, this is not to be missed. I tasted it head to head against Mac 18 Sherry Cask and Highland Park 18 Viking Pride. So much better than the Viking Pride (which I did not feel was very good) and more interesting and complex than the Mac 18. Score a bottle if you can!
Bought this on a bit of an impulse in the Flash Sales, but very glad I did. The notes are spot on, though I'd add honey and icing sugar. Wonderful depth of flavours which stay perfectly balanced as it develops and gradually fades. Wonderful!
