10 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland Park distillery on Orkney, presented in the heavily-Viking-inspired livery that was launched in 2017. This expression is normally found on mainland Europe, but it seems that some bottles have landed on our shores (presumably on some sort of longboat, considering all the Viking imagery connected to it).
Subtle Sherry influence, but balanced by heather-y smoke.
Ginger and waxy orange peel. Earthy peat with a another hint of Sherry sweetness buried underneath.
Sea salt and heather once again. A few herbaceous hints of coriander leaf and crushed black pepper.
£12.05 - £129.49
10 year old Viking Scar has been my favourite malt for some years. It's smooth, slightly fruity taste just appeals to me. A memorable time in Largs during a storm, my tent was trying to fly away, I stayed up all night hanging on to it and a bottle of Viking Scar to give me strength! Sad to hear from HP that it is no more in production, I am trying to stock up. Tried the 12 y.o. but really didn't like it. Unless I find something to compare with it, I will have to give up malt!
I am fan of highland whiskeys …. For the price point it’s very enjoyable and pleasant …. But would say for an extra few pounds the 12yr is the one to go for.
Rough caustic TCP smokey peat. Didn't like. Not as good as the 12 year old. Money wasted - there are better whiskeys for the price. Came close to pouring it down the drain - still might. Probably ok in a whiskey mac, but not really a straight sipping whiskey. Disappointed.
I was bought this as a gift being unfamiliar with the brand. What a great surprise. Smooth. Good flavours and light complexity. I’d go again for sure.
I was given this as a present and have greatly enjoyed it. It’s slightly rougher around the edges than the 12 but has a different quality I can’t put my finger on. It may be sacrilege for a single malt but it does work well in cocktails, particularly a Whisky Mac
