Single Malt
10 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland Park distillery on Orkney, presented in the heavily-Viking-inspired livery that was launched in 2017. This expression is normally found on mainland Europe, but it seems that some bottles have landed on our shores (presumably on some sort of longboat, considering all the Viking imagery connected to it).
Subtle Sherry influence, but balanced by heather-y smoke.
Ginger and waxy orange peel. Earthy peat with a another hint of Sherry sweetness buried underneath.
Sea salt and heather once again. A few herbaceous hints of coriander leaf and crushed black pepper.
£12.05 - £129.49
Very immature malt which I can only describe as 'fleshy', like cuts off of a freshly downed elk. not nice at all. if you've ever been to a slaughterhouse you'll know what I'm talking about. Hmm. I would cook with this. What are they doing up there in Kirkwall?
I really like this, Talisker 10 is a personal favorite, this has a very similar flavour profile. Spicy, a bit sea salty, some peat and smoke. At 60% of the price of Talisker it's a winner in my books.
The sherry in this is actually quite nice once it sweetens up, nutty and deep, but the malt itself is a bit harsh at this age, and the combination of the peat and the wood here is sour. HP12 also has a degree of sourness to it, but it's far more pronounced in the 10. Water does not help. Nor does aeration. Has a bit of a peppery burn to it (~). The 40 percent abv and chill filtration renders this a generally weak drink, lacking mouthfeel, aroma, and fullness of flavor. I have always had a generally good opinion of the Highland Park bottlings, but this particular expression does not in any real way 'do it' for me. I see no reason for me to ever get this over the twelve year old. Pass. Two and a half stars for good casks.
??????, ??????? 28, ???? ?? ??? ???? 2018 Hmm. Left the bottle open through the evening. Aeration in glass quicker now. Much improved. Will investigate further. Opinion of HP10 generally better, but would still keep to HP12 in future. [????? ????]
Not at all bad, but it needs a bit of time in the glass. One hour (+), and you'll get a pleasantly honeyed, cocoa powdery, mildly dusty (and the slightest bit peppery), ever so drinkable dram. Cinnamon and brown sugar. Orange peels and peaches. Pour a smaller one, half a glass, or it'll never get there. Wouldn't recommend water: just time.
