Highland Park 10 Year Old - Viking Scars

10 year old single malt Scotch whisky from the Highland Park distillery on Orkney, presented in the heavily-Viking-inspired livery that was launched in 2017. This expression is normally found on mainland Europe, but it seems that some bottles have landed on our shores (presumably on some sort of longboat, considering all the Viking imagery connected to it).

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Subtle Sherry influence, but balanced by heather-y smoke.

    Palate

Ginger and waxy orange peel. Earthy peat with a another hint of Sherry sweetness buried underneath.

    Finish

Sea salt and heather once again. A few herbaceous hints of coriander leaf and crushed black pepper.

    Excellent 10 yo

Pretty good 10 yo whisky. Highly recommended.

    It's got quite the bite

I'm a bit of a softy, and very much a beginner with whiskeys, so I'm not sure if my opinion counts. This one burns on the way down which is actually very enjoyable for torching an incoming flu. The finish is fortunately better than the initial roughness.. so even a big gulp burns in a spicy good way. The smell is quite fantastic and very inviting. (Sweet and Smokey), And the peppery bite after leaving it on your tongue a while is curiously satisfying before The sensation is smothered by the harshness. It settles well in the tummy and, for what it's worth, doesn't fog the brain the next morning. Now I'm looking forward to trying some of the better rated scotches!

    A bit rough

Seriously, a bit rough is all I have to say. The Orkney countryside is beautiful, this whisky isn't.
