    Single Malt

High Coast Timmer - Peat Smoke

The Timmer expression from Sweden's High Coast distillery is made up of 100% peated malt - no wonder then that it's nickname is Peat Smoke! Timmer is Swedish for 'timber', and the single malt was aged in first fill bourbon barrels for around six years. The whisky was bottled at 48% ABV in 2019, and released as part of the distillery's Origins series, with an outturn of 12,764 bottles.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Through grassy, creamy malt there’s tropical fruit, citrus zest, crumbly vanilla biscuits and layers of elegant peat smoke.

    Palate

A generous burst of warming smoke opens the palate, then smoked bacon, dried apricot, milky coffee and buttery fudge follow. Crystallised ginger adds bite, with boiled sweets and oak char emerging underneath.

    Finish

Burnt buttered toast and sweet toffee linger, with a little drying oak.

    Much appreciated!

Had visitors some time back - knowing my ancestry is Norwegian they brought Swedish whisky just to spite me. They did NOT succeed. After two careful sips I was sold. Great whisky! Almost like a mild Islay. My only complaint was related to the hole someone had made in the bottle - contents disappeared too quickly.

Will not lose to any Islay's big names

This version is a new gem. Grassy peat arrival like Ardbeg, bandage funk as in Longrow in the development, and long finish with the citrus notes as in Caol Ila. You can never tell it is not a scotch in a blind tasting. Consider the natural resources Sweden has, it is very similar to those of Scotland. Sea breeze, cold temperature, natural peat, local barley, and people with lots of passion. You can believe good whiskey comes out from the combination of these. One other impressive stuff is the transparency of the whisky making. You can obtain "all the information of the casks and ages in this whiskey" from an excel spreadsheet on the websites. I think this is because they are not bound by the rules of Scotch Whisky Association. They are free to publish everything in the bottle. Compass Box will be envied by this freedom.

    Fresh Smoke

I really enjoyed this. Heavy on the peat, but very fresh and fruity. Can easily compete with the heavy hitters.
