This wonderful peated Japanese single malt whisky hails from Hakushu distillery, owned by Suntory. The distillery resides in the forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake, with the original Hakushu distillery built in 1973. Another building was added in 1981, called Hakushu Higashi. Rather fittingly, it boasts a fresh and foresty flavour profile.
*UK (excluding Channel Islands) and retail only. Offer from 14 07 2025, while stock lasts.
Toasted barley, seed and nut loaf, chopped almonds and a little bit of barrel char. Hints of milk chocolate and dried grass bring sweetness.
Much more fruit on the palate, but it's by no means a sweet whisky. Still rich, herbaceous and grassy, with a waft of smoke along the way.
Quite short, though enjoyable with orange peel and a touch of minerality.
Very smoky compared to Distiller's Reserve. Fruit, cream and smoke on the nose. Sugar, mint, pine and smoke on the palate. Lingering sweet, light smoke on the finish. Well-rounded and complext. Fantastic drink, but the price is not justified. Japanese whiskies' price is simply out of whack.
This Japanese 12 year old whisky is just superb, everything about it is perfectly balanced from the very first nosing, typical Japanese know how from start to finish... Green cut grass effect, slightly herbal with nuances of both apple & pear ending with orange peel, very clean with a hint of sweetness, enjoy neat or with a few drops of pure filtered spring water. Heavenly whisky!!!
I was surprised by this Japanese whisky as I was expecting it to be a bit harsh and lacking the complex flavours of most Scottish malts. This was smooth and had some interesting but rather simple fruity flavours which were enhanced by the mild peatyness. Pleasant but not robust.
I spent almost 70 US dollars to buy this 12-year-old Japanese whiskey. He is the most unpleasant one in my 50-year drinking experience.
I will make it short... that's the only whiskey that knocked me off physically from a chair. Its like drinking a fresh air with a hint of alcohol in the middle of a forest
