    Single Malt

    Hakushu 18 Year Old

A fantastic 18 year old Japanese single malt from Suntory's Hakushu distillery, a malty, fragrant whisky of real quality. Some very gentle forest smoke and familiar green fruitiness combine gloriously.

    Turning Japanese...

...I really think so. More and more I discover these wonderful Japanese whiskies, after a disastrous tasting of a Yoichi in Scotland last year. I am now convinced that was an unfortunate one-off, as everything I've sampled recently has been a revelation. This is sharp, fresh, lingering sweetness, apples, pears, and fresh cut flowers. Just gorgeous, clean and deeply tasty. Recommended.

Not a patch on it's younger brother

I've had this on my purchase list for a long time and once it came back in stock I jumped on it. I'm a massive fan of Japanese whisky, having had pretty much every mainstream bottling on offer, and a big fan of the 12yo Hakushu (probably my favourite). I found this a little underwhelming really. It's much more complex than the 12 as you would expect and the oak is just about right but it lacks balance and the finish just isn't as good as the 12. It seems that the best parts of the 12 have been lost with the extra years and the vibrancy and dance you get from the 12 Hakushu just isn't there. Glad I bought one but I would chose the 12 over this in a heartbeat....which makes me a little sad inside.
