From the family-run, small-batch spirits producers from Sonoma County comes an American whiskey which was created with organic Californian corn and roasted malt. It was originally matured in new American Oak barrels before being finished in stout beer barrels which were sourced from Lagunitas Brewery, who are friends of Griffo. I wish my friends gave me cool casks...
Roasted chocolate malt, coffee beans and dry earth lead, before lively orange peel and fresh fig provide a sweet underlay.
Fresh-ground black pepper crackles through dark chocolate, burnt toast and oily walnuts. Classic bourbon nutty sweetness fills the backdrop with gingernut biscuits, prunes and a little caramel.
Toasted oak and espresso linger with a hint of tobacco.
Utterly vile, had a sample and had to pour it down the drain. Smells and tastes like perfume.
Really tastes of stout. If you like imps and whisky, you'll love this.
This one is challenging. It smells like no whiskey I've ever had before and the strange aroma follows through strongly into the flavour. I can only describe it as 'roasted rabbit hutch'. After a while in the glass it's becoming more like wood polish on the nose with dark roasted grain husks and some chocolate fighting for presence on the palate. Everything is battling that initial weird burning MDF note and I'm not entirely sure what's winning, or if I even want to watch the fight. 3 Stars for pure WTF-ness.
