An extravagant single malt distilled in 1996 by Speyside-based distillery Glentauchers, bottled in 2018 by Samaroli with an outturn of only 230 bottles. As ever with Samaroli bottlings, the label is just as wonderful as the whisky itself.
Aromas of spices, sawdust and bread fresh out of the oven.
The sweet and creamy combination of meringue and whipped cream, paired with under-ripe fruit.
Rich, sticky fruit cake with nutmeg.
This is a lovely drink. Light gold with a smooth attack and a round mouthfeel. Just enough drying wood on the middle and back end to make it taut and firm. Flavors are mellow, fruited and warming with a distinct mace and sweet roasted chestnut tickle. I slightly prefer the pink bird label 1996 over the blue bird samaroli 1996 glentauchers, but not by much. Both are excellent and unusual.
