A very interesting whisky from Glenmorangie, its first made with barley kilned with botanicals. Inspired by the woodlands near Glenmorangie’s director of whisky creation Dr Bill Lumsden’s home, he decided to make a dram that would evoke the scents, sounds, and sights of the forest.
Kilning barley with botanicals used to be a common practice and Glenmorangie revived it here after a series of experiments. Juniper berries, birch bark, and heather flowers, as well as a little peat were used to kiln the barley to create a Glenmorangie “as lush and leafy as the forest itself”, in Dr. Lumsden’s words. In order to allow the spirit’s flavours to shine, he aged the whisky in bourbon casks including many refill casks.
Forest floor notes lead the way with oily pine and juniper, nutty malt, and woody spice, with murmurs of smoke in the distance.
An array of zesty menthol and orange peels, hints of hibiscus, and vanilla pod with a backdrop of fennel, anise, and smoked toffee.
Candied citrus fruits finish things off, with more pine and robust barley tangling with delicate oak char.
£70 for a no age statement whisky. Give it until after Christmas and I guarantee this will be discounted to £40.

A wonderful whiskey almost too complex to describe. You can sit around with friends for hours and pleasantly describe what you’re tasting. Got a gift certificate and used it toward this purchase. Not disappointed. Cheers
The first thing you immediately notice on the nose is the peat, not because it's a peat bomb like Ardbeg, but because you don't expect it in a Glenmorangie. It's a very gentle bonfire smoke, mixed with the unmistakable juniper berry aroma, orange zest and still that Glenmorangie sweetness - honey and brandy snap. In the mouth it's a zinger. Not from black pepper or heavy spice, but from the gentle peat mixing with a huge citrus kick, a fresh deep wintergreen mint note and then a very strong sense of licorice. The finish is quite long, very warming with honey and heather, deep vanilla and that lingering peat. I honestly don't quite know what to make of it. It's not horrible, but at the same time I think you'd need to be in the mood for something totally off the wall to actively reach for this bottle.
