A tremendous addition to the Experimental Series from Glenfiddich, combining the influences of Scotland and Somerset! This single malt has been finished in casks that previously held Somerset Pomona Spirit (a blend of apple cider brandy and apple juice) from the Somerset Cider Brandy Co.! This experiment came about after Glenfiddich's Malt Master Brian Kinsman paid a visit to the Somerset Cider Brandy Co. to meet with its Master Distiller Matilda Temperley. After a stroll around the vintage orchards, the idea was born, the casks were sent from Somerset to Scotland and filled with a core of delicious malt, before being left to ripen. Top stuff for sipping on a warm evening, perhaps after a nice glass of cider.
Crisp green apple peels, a whiff of vanilla, and some tart, zesty notes of fermented fruit to balance sweet buttery toffee.
Packed with fruit – a host of pressed apples and hints of pear are followed up by zestier notes of orange and lemon peel. Spiced apple cake and a whiff of nutmeg bring warming spice.
The apple cider notes carry through to the finish, with pressed juices and red orchard fruits tangling with gentle oak spice and creamy barley.
I have to agree with the other reviews that this is unbelievably soapy. Its almost like drinking deoderant or something. I think there's no age statement so it must be basically moonshine - harsh with this really sour soapy after taste. Hard to believe it's 43% because I've had smoother drams at over 50. Not an experiment I'd encourage Glenfiddich to repeat....
Have enjoyed the experimental series (but missed icewine) and this is nice. I hate the emperors new clothes business of whiskey tasting and I just like a nice dram, but this actually tastes of something! ? The dram actually, clearly, tastes of the barrels it was finished in. Go buy in Sainsbury’s for £34 before it disappears!
For me this is not nice at all.
I have very much enjoyed standard Glenfiddich expressions and several of the other Experimental Series such as Project XX and Fire&Cane, but here the pleasant (but muted) nose and fruity first sip is then completely overwhelmed by an artificially-floral soapy pot-pourri flavour. Some tasters report having a good bottle and then a bad bottle like this, so perhaps it's a quality-control issue rather than by design, but mine is almost undrinkable.
Not nice at all. Rough and unpleasant after taste. Suitable for use cocktails only. Avoid.
