It's the fourth installment of the Glenfiddich Perpetual Collection, originally released as a travel retail exclusive. The collection explores perpetual maturation in a method similar to a sherry solera system, with whisky matured in a series of vats that are never fully emptied. Each vat is only half emptied for bottling, and then topped up with younger spirit so that the maturation continues while retaining a portion of the original spirit. This 18-year-old single malt spent its time in a selection of oloroso sherry and bourbon casks and was married in solera vat number four.
Oaken vanilla, juicy pear, and baked apple, dusted with sweet spice.
Silky layers of buttery oak and stewed fruits, with vanilla fudge, and creamy toasted almonds.
Warming spice and sweet, sherried fruit cake, with a touch of cacao and pepper in the distance.
The regular Glenfiddich 18 year old whilst being one of the best 18 year olds is very good value, it is a barnstormer of a whisky. This is just ordinary, and at this price (I got a bottle at the airport for £80), that ain’t enough. It’s nice, smooth and the tasting notes seem to concur with what I’ve found but it’s just nothing really to write home about. Half way down the bottle now too so it ain’t a neck pour issue either. Better luck with the next batch maybe
Not know as a Glenfiddich afficionado but...., this is really rather good. Apple and soft fruit to start before the sherry & bourbon casks do their things and then a really decent velvety lingering finish. Not the most complex but I'm happy to overlook that. There's also evidence of older whiskies in here too.
