Glenfarclas 12

Lots of sherry and fruit in this, Glenfarclas 12 was originally bottled for export and travel retail markets. In 2006, it was named the "Best Sherried Whisky" in the Single Malt World Cup, and in 2007 and 2008 it won Gold at the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Light and creamy with a mix of supple, soft sherry and Manuka honey. Gentle and well-balanced, there are hints of smoke, rich oak, and a little pine resin.

Palate Medium-bodied, with notes of date and walnut cake, Oloroso sherry and hints of earthy forest floor. A beautiful note of malt, with toffee apple and a touch of smoke.

Finish Spicy and long, notes of allspice, cinnamon and cloves, with orange zest and sherry.

Reviews for Glenfarclas 12 Year Old
Not the sherry bomb I imagined, but odd and interesting and very quaffable
This has an odd smell to me - waxed wood, furniture polish with a soft fruity sweetness underneath.
Taste is equally odd - similar to the smell, with a pretty pronounced burn, but the sweetness is more prominent and there's a carbon, coal like vibe and perhaps a bit of orange peel, followed by a long satisfying finish.
Overall, it's very much its own thing, and the sherry seems balanced and pretty dry. Weird, but I quite like it.

What is should be, but nothing more
This is a straightforward, honest dram that offers few surprises but gives you exactly what you expect. It lacks complexity, but definitely has a generous helping of sherry sweetness. If anything I would say that the sherry somewhat overpowers the initial distillation, but for most people, that won't be a bad thing.
Not much to say really. A decent entry-level whisky that doesn't disappoint, but makes you wonder what more premium expressions might offer.

Underrated and more complex than expected
underrated single malt especially at the price point
Many say it is simple and while I get that view if you slow down and really pay attention i think it is a bit more complex than at first blush
The very subtle smoke and sweetness pairs it well with a nice cigar that has a touch of spice

No brainer
I tried this along with my other 12yr old, 43% natural colour whiskies ie Glengoyne, Tamdhu and Glendronach. It’s a good whisky but tastes more like a bourbon matured rather than Sherry matured whisky. My favourite Tamdhu came out on top followed by Glendronach, then this and Glengoyne a fair way behind. I like it but when compared with the Tamdhu or Glendronach all about the same price point it’s a no brainer

Disappointing.
I was excited to grab this at an airport after having loved the 15. Sadly it is quite disappointing. Though only 3 years younger than the 15, it is worlds apart in the body and taste. Spend the extra for the 15, it's worth it.

Sherry Bomb or Cherry Bomb?
I got cherries all over on this one. A little pine on the first whiff, almost like cherry cough medicine. Palate is sweet, creamy, and the sherry is abundant. My brain sez “more cherries and caramel!” May not Beas complex as the Macallan sherry cask, but it’s taste is special in its own vein. Love it! Price is nice.
