Glenfarclas
Scotland
Single Malt
Glenfarclas 105 is a superb cask strength whisky, with a history that can be traced to 1968. When the original incarnation was released that year, Glenfarclas became the first distillery to release a barrel proof single malt whisky.
The bottling was eventually re-named to 105, referring to its alcohol content in British Proof, which equates now to 60% ABV.
The 105 doesn't carry an age statement presently, making it rare among Glenfarclas bottlings. Although, there are suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels.
Drying, assertive and richly spiced, the 105 makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best “Bang for your buck” whisky in 2004. Add a drop of water if you please to explore its depth - and don't be put off by that ABV, there's plenty of flavour here to enjoy.
Great depth, Sherry. Creamy and nutty. Honey on toast, touch of smoky coffee.
Silken, spicy and peppery oak. Almond, praline, hazelnut, dried peels, fruity. Touch of Armagnac, hint of rancio perhaps?
Long, peppery and nutty.

Wow wow wow. Lovely sherry bomb
Sherry casks didn't disappoint, worked a charm calming down the powerful distillate. I love it.
The only Glenfarclas expressions I'd had experience with previously were the 17 and 25- both were great, if a bit too oak-forward (esp. the 25, naturally). Solid whiskies, to be certain, however neither really wowed me as the 105 did at a tasting a few days ago. Tried it alongside a port cask Kilchoman, which was also great. I enjoyed the 105 so much that I purchased a bottle tonight and shared it with some friends, all of whom it was too strong for- no surprise-, but they all remarked on what a tremendous nose it had. The nose was what originally stole the show for me at the tasting- flourishing with sweet aromas, perhaps some baked goods? Delightful. I actually didn't get much alcohol burn on the nose- I found the sweetness (sherry?) overpowered that (which seems to the opposite of most reviews here). Going down, the heat is the first thing you pick up on obviously, but all things considered I found it to actually be quite smooth. Sherry, dried fruit, I get baked goods again. Long finish with some bitterness. Overall really into this one- would love to try the 105 22 someday. 4.5 because maybe a touch too hot?
