    Glenfarclas 105

Glenfarclas 105 is a superb cask strength whisky, with a history that can be traced to 1968. When the original incarnation was released that year, Glenfarclas became the first distillery to release a barrel proof single malt whisky.

The bottling was eventually re-named to 105, referring to its alcohol content in British Proof, which equates now to 60% ABV.

The 105 doesn't carry an age statement presently, making it rare among Glenfarclas bottlings. Although, there are suggestions that it is matured for 8-10 years in a combination of both ex-sherry and ex-bourbon barrels.

Drying, assertive and richly spiced, the 105 makes for a superb dram, one the Malt Maniacs rated as the best “Bang for your buck” whisky in 2004. Add a drop of water if you please to explore its depth - and don't be put off by that ABV, there's plenty of flavour here to enjoy.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Great depth, Sherry. Creamy and nutty. Honey on toast, touch of smoky coffee.

    Palate

Silken, spicy and peppery oak. Almond, praline, hazelnut, dried peels, fruity. Touch of Armagnac, hint of rancio perhaps?

    Finish

    Long, peppery and nutty.

    A Disappointment

The sherry influence is strong but the taste is in total too boozy and off-balance. Adding water mellows it out but it still never quite reach the level I expected of it. Repeated tasting hasn't changed my opinion from the initial reaction.

    Thumping good Whisky

Our club sampled this one last night and it was a unanimous 5 star rating. This is a powerful delocious quality whisky and outstanding value to boot.

    'The good stuff'

This is one of my favourite whiskies. I bought a bottle to take to my friends' wedding in the States. The groom and his friends were astounded by the quality of this. I like to drink it neat. Interesting that someone else had a cork break. I've bought 3 bottles and the cork broke on one. I'd still recommend this, though.

    Exquisite finish

Very strong, even with water, but the finish is long and completely worth the "bite." I am somewhat of a newbie and have stayed with the more tame light and delicate scotches but the finish of this dram is great! The sample was a very nice choice. I wont be buying a bottle, but I'm glad to have had the experience. Also letting the glass sit, covered, for 30 minutes before enjoying made a difference.
