As you may have guessed from the name of this expression, GlenDronach is going back in time with Traditionally Peated. More specifically, about 200 years back, to the year 1826 when the distillery was founded, and it was common practice in the Highlands to burn peat in the kiln towards the end of the barley malting. For the whisky, the distillery has kept its traditional sherried style, marrying liquid from a range of Pedro Ximénez, Oloroso sherry and Port casks, all bottled up at 48% ABV.
Treacle, orange sweeties, set honey, liquorice and smoky oak.
Flamed orange peel and maple syrup, with Scottish tablet, clove-studded orange and cooked plum.
Smoked barley lingers alongside juicy forest fruits.
I love this! Smooth mellow whisky, with the peat flavour I like, possibly my new favourite dram, and the price is reasonable. Will definitely buy again!
“Peatiness”, But that’s about it. A rather clunky and inelegant expression of what could and should have been a well rounded, complex and punchy 48% whisky. I bought it on vacay in Phuket and regret it.
Just what I was looking for: a peated Speyside or Highland maybe finished in sherry casks, and high strength, no colouring or chill-filtering. This has a superb balance of peat smoke, sherry/port, and wood from the casks. MOM notes are pretty close, I'd perhaps add cocoa or very dark chocolate. A slightly dry finish, oakiness lingers nicely. Great stuff!
I have loved every Glendronach bottling I have tried and felt they were fairly priced. This is not a bad whisky at all. Something not as heavily peated (around 20ppm more or less) is welcome on my shelf after trying all those heavily peated ones. It means other interesting notes get a chance to come through. Alas, it also shows this whisky is a little on the young side. In my opinion it needs a little longer in the cask to deserve the price tag.
The cask influences blend with the peat in a nice way..... BUT, I wish I could actually pick out some of those sherry and port notes. I expected this have layers but it's pretty one dimensional, and quite young/hot. If this was about £12-£15 cheaper I'd not to many gripes and be happy quaffing it, but at £50 a bottle i think you can find more interesting stuff.
