    Product details

    Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey

Glendalough Double Barrel Irish Whiskey is a single grain Irish whiskey, initially matured in American bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period of six months in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks. This comes bottled at 42% ABV, brought down to this strength by Wicklow mountain water. A rather tasty release presented by Glendalough, rich in vanilla, caramel, Christmas spices and dried fruit notes.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A creamy, malty nose begins with rich vanilla, white chocolate and buttery fudge. Notes of cooking apples, white grapes, marzipan icing and toasted oak form in the backdrop.

    Palate

Succulent caramel, salty melted butter and crème anglaise provide a thick, decadent sweetness with a fruity underlay from blackberries and marmalade.

    Finish

Polished oak and a hint of wood spice linger.

“Found it on sale at my local outlet for $28(US). Was very excited based on what I had seen here earlier. Opened it up and poured some in a glass with one cube of ice. Initial impression was not good - harsh smell, almost of petrol - very high alcohol sniff. Fortunately I braved it out. Wow! My favorite these days has been Teeling (as a benchmark), and I find base level Jameson/Bushmills to be harsher than I would like. Glendalough has just a little bit of the harshness, but also a hint of sweet (honey?) that makes it go down very easily. No burn on the throat at the end. If you can get over the initial sniff you will be very pleased!”

    Not good for my taste

Ok, I hate to be that one guy, but I nearly hated this whiskey. There was no good flavor to be found for me. Straight, some water, on the rocks, nothing worked. I'm going to give it a 2 star because I'm hoping I got a bad bottle. Yes, I'm a bourbon fan most of the time, but I had high expectations that weren't met. It really is possible that it's just my tastes aren't sophisticated for this, but I was let down.

    Damn good

I've had more expensive whiskey that I enjoyed a lot less. Smooth, sweet and buttery, with a little spice. Not your average Irish but worth every penny.
