GlenAllachie
Scotland
Single Malt
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One is a peated whisky made at GlenAllachie Distillery using mainland peat from St. Fergus. The whisky was peated to 35ppm and benefited from a lengthy fermentation period of 160 hours to create a fruity, complex spirit that could stand up to ageing in sherry casks, which is exactly what it did. Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons, to be exact, following an initial maturation in American oak bourbon barrels. One for fans of smoke and sherry.
Coffee, cedar, salted caramel, stewed plums, marmalade, and cigar box aromas join the sweet smokiness of the mainland peat.
Dark chocolate, butterscotch, orange peel, dates, blackcurrant compote, and burnt treacle.
Mocha and dark fruit.
Lovely stuff. All the sweet fruit and deep sherry tones you might expect from a Speyside, but with a strong puff of turf fire. Orange peel strong on the nose and palate with all the iodine, bandage and peat from an Islay. Honey and butterscotch balance it. Bottled at 48%, real bargain at this price.
This came up on a Master of Malt list of alternative peated whiskies to try. They were right, you should try it. Will be buying another one and interested to go through the other Meikle Toir now.
I discovered this whisky at the Scottish whisky festival last year and fell in love with it straight away. The flavour is awesome.
