This 2014 vintage single malt from Glenallachie joins the Benchmark collection from indie bottler Murray McDavid. The whisky spent nine years maturing in a Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead, yielding 356 bottles when it was opened in 2024, without added colour or chill filtration.
This dram is Dangerous, as in moreish. Even At full Strength of 58.4 it begs Another sip. The Nose is immediately unctuous, sweet and almost cloying, like Strawberry mousse, or A custardy fruit trifle, with a VERY thin Layer of ...French Mustard!! |A subtle piquancy when you breathe in real deep!! WOW! Now I HATE mustard, but this works!! Rather odd that a swirl in the glass yields no oily legs, yet it feels thick and sweet on the palate. Not hugely complex, but a belter of a 9YO!! - PX can often be one Trick Pony...but what a trick!! v. Satisfying! The finish is a wee bit short, and drying.. but this is a rich, tasty dram, a bit of A figgy pudding, and very entertaining . Though it should stay back of shelf for a rich after dessert with guests malty treat, it begs you To take Another sip...or poor just another wee one. And that;s the problem...not sure if I Should big this up. The nose blew me away at The Croydon Whisky Fest and I;m contemplating getting another...but I;m worried that if I day too many nice things there'll be none left! Water opens it up a tad, even though it's GREAT neat...I;m getting "stone pavement" now , on nose And palate. as I stare out at at St Ives harvour. No this isnt a maritime malt, but that;s where it takes me !! Delightful...
