GlenAllachie 12 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Sherry Wood Finish

The oldest of three whiskies released by GlenAllachie in mid-2019, each of having been finished in different types of cask. The 12 year old expression began ageing in American oak barrels, where it slumbered for 10 years, before being moved over to Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for the rest of its maturation. Oodles of classic sherried deliciousness to dig in to here, pairing handsomely with GlenAllachie's top-notch spirit.

    A nice expression

Tried at a tasting event - it's a nice expression, definitely one of their better ones and does have a similarity to Glendronach however, to the commentator suggesting it as a replacement for Allardice: sorry, just no. As with all the Glenallachie's I tasted there is a spiciness to it, especially in the finish - now if you like that you'll get your rocks off on them, I don't mind it but I'm not overly sold on it, especially when it appears quite heftly as it does in Glenallachie's. This one is more subtle, which allows the sherry notes to sing, making this a much nice expression for me. It's very nice and certainly worth a look by itself. At the tasting it was suggested we mix this expression with GlenAllachie's 10 yr Port wood - and we did - and it was really, really good. Not an option for a lot of people I know but combined they were excellent - the spiciness was toned down completely, the sherry notes were kicked onto another level, and the complexity of both the whiskies, when blended, just amped up. If they made an expression with these two combined I'd definitely be in for a bottle.

    Lovely nose

Wow, just a wonderful nose. Complex with layers of fresh and dried fruits, a touch of sweet citrus. On the palate you find the same balanced combo of fresh and dried fruits, I get the dark chocolate and the spicy sweetness, but not the banana. The finish starts off lovely, but becomes a bit astringent (which is the only thing keeping it from full marks).

Difficult to say how it could be improved

I have been looking for a replacement for my favourite whisky (18 year old Glendronach Allardice) This is a firm contender at a reasonable price. Perfectly balanced and bottled at the right strength. One finished another two in the cabinet ??
