Single Malt
Classic Campbeltown single malt matured in first-fill bourbon barrels before a finishing period spent in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. A wonderful introduction to the delights of this great distillery, and frankly just a great whisky with a pleasing toffee core and rich depth.
Vibrant fruit emerges first (peach flesh and green apple peels), followed by chewy vanilla fudge, a hint of salinity, then an array of oak-y spices including some char.
Opens with more fudge with a little dusting of powdered sugar. Powerful, oily and a touch herbaceous with some German brandy character.
Sherried notes come through more on the finish.
I prefer a whisky that's chewy, salty or smoky. This has a defined marine flavour, tempered by the sherry and oak for added complexity. A respectable cousin to Springbank which has become as rare as hens teeth of late.
You get what it says on the label, classic Campbellton taste and aroma
Exceptional value malt, clear Sherry influence with a nice kick of peat in the background
To be honest, this doesn't taste of much. Drinkable yet forgetable. If it was priced like Loch Lomond Original, I wouldn't mind, but it's priced like Inchmurrin, and that's a much more flavourful dram. Thought the 15 would do the business, but really wasn't impressed. Much prefer Longrow and Kilkerran of the Campbeltowns
I was pleasantly surprised by this for the money, it is my intro to the distillery, but I am definitely going to look at the 15 or the victoriana now - as I could quite easily daily drink this
