Single Malt
A 16 year old single malt from the Glen Scotia distillery in Campbeltown, released for the Travel Retail market. This expression is allowed to mature in bourbon and American oak barrels, and is bottled at 46% ABV.
Grassy peat arrives first, shortly followed by fresh peach and oak furniture.
Orange peel, cookie dough, eucalyptus and salted peanuts.
Creamy malt and earthy vanilla. Subtle oak spice.
I haven't had much Campbell town whisky, so picked this up out of curiosity, and after some quick research. I'm loving it. My first impression on the nose was scented smoke. Then vanilla, honey, fruit - classic speyside, bourbon kinda flavors. In the mouth - yummy, I love the heavy oily feel. Wraps around your tongue. Complicated stuff, demands attention and I can't figure it out completely. Fruity, milk chocolate, honey and vanilla - classic speyside kinda stuff. Then salty tang, and once again a perfumed floral smoky note. You get that perfumed smoke in some bowmore-s, but this is more subtle. And then a drying spicy finish - an industrial, oily note cuts through. Long aftertaste. Overall - beautiful stuff, great balance and depth. If Caol Ila was a Speysider this is what it would have been. Not sure if it makes any sense, but whisky like this is not supposed to be an objective measurement - it evokes what it evokes, so what the hell!
A really complex and wonderful whisky. Needs air!
