Glen Moray Port Cask Finish - Elgin Classic

Glen Moray were one of the first distillery's to experiment with Port casks, with this epression joining their Elgin Classic range of affordable no age statement releases back in 2014. It's treated to an 8 month finishing period in Tawny Port casks before being bottled.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Creamy vanilla at the fore, joined by jammy redcurrants and blackberry. Toasted oak touches in the background.

    Palate

Butterscotch candies, golden barley and a touch of cinnamon. The port cask influence comes through with light notes of raisins and freshly picked red berries.

    Finish

Rather long, with honey, vanilla and a dusting of cocoa.

    Hmm

Vanilla custard on the nose along with a chemical-candy-flavouring-blueberry and apricot yogurt smell. I don't really like that. Tastes better than it smells. It has flavors that I wouldn't associate with a simple single malt whisky, but also not with port or sherry cask finishes. Finishes sweet, whiff of oak perhaps. Not too long. You know it's a cheap bottle, especially for a port cask finish. But i wouldn't buy again personally.

Decent for a probably young NAS

This whiskey is Non Age Statement (NAS), meaning it is probably matured a number of years that won't be a selling point on the label. Having said that, the fruity notes and subtle winy aftertaste are present and distinct, but negatively influenced by the harsh alcoholic feeling due to its young age. My bottle was recently opened, and I'm sure it will mellow out in the coming weeks, making this young but unique dram more pleasant as it goes.

    More than you would expect

Probably the cheapest single malt with a port finish that can be found. Color: Lovely light pinkish (in the glass). Nose: Very light and fresh, red fruits, sweet and sour, way more pleasant than you would expect in such a young whisky. Taste: Everything you would expect from the nose, fresh sour and sweet red fruits (raspberry and maybe some hints of strawberry) and goes down fairly smoothly, the finish is medium long. The Port influence is a bit superficial but presents enough to make a difference. This whisky, in my opinion, gives more than you would expect. However, I'm not familiar with the Classic bottling of Glen Moray so a good comparison between the 2 can not be made. All in all, great value for your money. Great for drinking around a bonfire or in the summer.

It's okay, but for me without any particular taste that I would identify with port wine and otherwise a tad too harsh on my tongue. In short, it's a reasonably good ordinary Speyside Scotch Whisky.

    John

Front comes with butterscotch and apples and finds blackberries and cinnamon nice even spice with the smooth heat. It is a come back to steady friend. Absolutely worth the price.
