Glen Moray Peated - Elgin Classic

A peaty expression joins Glen Moray's Classic range! Reasonably laid-back for a peated expression, but by no means lazy, this Speyside single malt Scotch whisky balances peaty whiffs with plenty of vanilla, and some fragrant elements as some of the distillery's usual character makes its way through. One for those newer to peaty whisky, as well as peat fans, and great value.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Familiar peat smoke off the bat, with characteristic butteriness developing.

    Palate

Smoke never gets too intense, but plays a central role alongside vanilla and orchard fruit.

    Finish

A little bit peppery, though still enjoyably sweet.

    Garbage.

Tastes like Dettol. Undrinkable. Would pour it down the drain but I’m concerned about the environment, will maybe use it in the summer (if we get one )to fire the bbq logs up. Foul tasting hooch.

Decent, but peat-heads need not apply.

Very, very light peat smoke - as an Islay drinker, it was almost indiscernible. This whisky is delicate in flavor and light in body. I detect some vegetal notes on the nose, with lemon sweets and a bit of soot. On the palate, I get vanilla buttercream icing and lemon cake with that subtle, slightly ashy and medicinal peat far in the background. Water reveals something of melon as well. Simple, but tasty. The smoke becomes more evident on the finish, after the other flavors have subsided. I preferred the unpeated Classic, as it had more complexity and body. I don't recommend water in this whisky - at least not very much - as it is a fragile, delicate dram. Not bad for the $22 US I paid for it.

    Does the job for me

I think this is an excellent whisky for the price point even if it's used for a hot toddy once in a while. I recently picked up a bottle for under 20 quid which not far away from the supermarkets own branded whiskies. I cannot compare a £50 bottle of Lagavulin 8 to this but I find it very similar in alot of ways just not as much peaty goodness as the lag 8. It's alot more subtle but that's a good thing sometime, there's obviously a reason why the difference in price. I liked it that much I picked up a second bottle for a daily dram

    well worth £18th

As good as Bowmore first cask. Very defiant peaty expression

    BOOOO!

BOOOOO! Speyside? Spewside! Granted I'm not a very informed whiskey drinker but for a single malt whiskey I would have though it might be smoother, less throat burning and not as medicinal tasting. Is that the peat finish? If so, peat you suck. I cannot get through a glass no matter how much ice or water I add. I even tried with Coke. It still tasted terrible. No stars.
