Single Malt
Glen Elgin
The Glen Elgin Distillery dates back all the way to 1898, and it's situated up in the Speyside region. Using six stills and six wooden worm tubs, Glen Elgin produces a wonderfully fruity, flavoursome spirit which is very popular among blenders. But blends aren't why we're here – we're here to get the full-on Glen Elgin experience from its ace single malt! This is the 12 year old expression, the only official distillery bottling from Glen Elgin, boasting those aforementioned fruit notes alongside helpings of buttery vanilla and sweet spices.
Cereal sweetness on the nose, with hints of rum spice, a little espresso coffee, toffee apples and ginger.
A soft, malty palate with hints of salty butter, Corinth raisins, walnut loaf and coffee ice-cream.
A long, malt-driven finish with hints of sugary porridge on the tail.
For me the dram has quite distinct floral qualities, I can vaguely taste heather, thistle and a slight hint of sage. Its sweet palate gets a rather short but pleasant malty finish. A little too dry for my liking.
okay so in a whisky lover but not an out and out expert. but most whisky drinkers are not. this speyside seems to get a few folk saying it's not special, but it's a standout SPEYSIDE for me. and as a speyside lover - that makes it special. very nice, very easy to drink but without being 'plain'. tried many many whiskies and Glen Elgin 12 is still right up there as a favourite.
Very decent nose and early palate, the tasting notes are spot on. However my bottle turns bitter shortly afterwards in the late palate and the finish, overshadowing any other taste, not sure if i got a corked bottle or just need to add a few drops more water. It sits on the shelf now and I'll see if it settles down in a few weeks
Great nose followed by a smooth, rich taste. Excellent dram for the spring or summer.
although the nose is rich and the taste is good, this whisky doesnt deliver. The taste is good, but dry and faint. Finish is hardly present. I've read a lot of very good things about this whisky... I wonder why..
