A great Girvan single grain Scotch here, distilled in 1990 and filled into ex-bourbon casks for a nice long slumber. Fast forward 30 years to 2022, and a little company called Master of Malt – purveying fine spirits to people with good taste – cracked open the casks and bottled it up as an independent release! An impressive liquid with a total outturn of 185 bottles. You're welcome.
Creamy, zesty notes of lemon pie and fresh kiwi, a touch of creosote, homemade rice pudding, just a hint of peppery green jalapeño.
So many layers! Thick toffee, followed by a touch of sweet char brings suggestions of burnt marshmallow. Maple and pecan plaits and honeyed flapjack welcome a punch of floral malt with toasted oak resting beneath.
Gloopy caramel with nutty layers of candied almond. Ginger and cinnamon shoots through, leaving a soft trail of heat alongside lingering melted s'mores.

Grain whiskies often get overlooked in favour of the huge range of single malts on offer due generally to the perception they’re lacking in flavour or are one dimensional. However, after 31 long years in the barrel, this Girvan is simply delicious and, as the notes above state, very multi layered. Plenty of delicious vanilla and overripe melon flavours accompany the rich oak imparted by the casks. A steal for anyone looking to sample something a little more mature without breaking the bank.
