Fettercairn
Scotland
Single Malt
One of four new Fettercairn expressions to be launched in August 2018, the Fettercairn 12 Year Old was intended to embody the distillery’s floral and exotic fruit-driven character. It was matured in American oak bourbon casks and bottled at 40% ABV.
Refreshing nectarine, white flowers and milk chocolate emerge initially. Black toffee and subtle roasted coffee provide darker notes underneath,
Tropical fruit and sticky Jamaican ginger cake add a sweet and spicy depth which a flicker of bitter herbs and vanilla complement.
Orchard fruits and soft spices linger.
At first I wasn’t impressed by the sharp taste, despite some floran afternotes. But it does give a nice lightheadiness, that may convince me to explore if not the 12, but the 16 year old ones.
Light and subtle, hence, there's a lot of variety in the tasting notes. For me, it's all about the mild orangey citrus and spice (cloves), with some vanilla & malt in the middle and a medium finish that leaves you with more gently warming spice. I'm sure the subtlety in the profile brings out the orchard fruit that appears in many other tasting notes, but not so much for me. There's nothing too bold here, so I think it would make a nice aperitif or early evening dram to enjoy a Sunset Song!
I’ve been wanting to try this for some time now so finally bought one from MM. I just don’t get this exotic fruit taste at all . I get vanilla, orchard fruit and ginger spice but none of the mango, nectarine etc. It’s not a bad malt but I have others that are the same price or cheaper that offer more. The finish is too short for me too. I’m enjoying it but feel like I wouldn’t rush to repeat the purchase.
Have to say I found this one of nicest new whisky I have tasted for a while. Really enjoyed the pear taste it left. Excellent value
Interesting to read some of the reviews previously posted, especially regarding peach notes. I was enjoying a dram of this tonight and whilst I could pick up on the peach notes there was an underlying element that didn’t quite make that description wholly satisfactory for my palate. After a lot of nosing I came to the conclusion that the peach element reminded me more of, in an olfactory sense of picking and smelling girolle mushrooms, that slightly damp, slightly mossy peach stone scent but still quite wet woody and not so much fresh fruit as other people have described. Enjoyed it very much and love a whisky that poses a challenge and makes you think. Great way to unwind after a hard shift in the kitchen.
