Famous Grouse
Scotland
Blended
A new name and packaging for the excellent 'Black Grouse' blend sees it become Famous Grouse Smoky Black. Although not mentioned by name anymore, the bottle still features a Tetrao tetrix, otherwise known as a blackcock.
Medium, quite smoky. Solid peat note, rummy sweetness, touch of dry wood.
Medium, balanced. Peat smoke, caramel, spice.
Long, slightly peaty.
Not a big fan of smoke or peat, but this was surprisingly good and easy to drink. Probably my favourite blend atm
Great value for money and well drinkable. Lightly peated plus sweet sherry/rum taste. Slightly unrefined around the edges at first, but this soon disappears once you get into it. When available at £14 on offer in supermarkets it's a steal!
Nothing wrong with this renamed blend from my long time favourite house, though I would hesitate to label it smokey. A hint of peat in the aftertaste but no more than that. Overall a very satisfying blend and at less than £17, a most friendly price.
Black Grouse is my favorite budget blend. I was first referred to it by Ron White (over the TV) and it was a very good recommendation. It's smooth, mellow, and I have no guilt putting it over ice.
I actually quite enjoy Smoky Black. It's well balanced for a budget blend with a mix of sweet and smoke. Certainly not the heavy smoke you get from some Islays, but it's definately there and this is an easy sipper. My favourite budget blend I've tried so far.
