Edradour
Scotland
Single Malt
This is the core expression of 10 year old Ballechin single malt Scotch whisky, which is heavily peated whisky from Edradour. It has been named for the silent Ballechin distillery near the Edradour distillery. Releases under the Ballechin name from Edradour were previously presented as part of The Discovery Series, many of which were matured in different types of casks, including Sherry, bourbon and a selection of wine casks. This 10 year old expression, however, comes from a combination of ex-Oloroso Sherry and ex-bourbon casks.
Oily malt, whiffs of burnt ends and BBQ char, a few touches of apple and fig.
Chewy dates and oak, with smouldering peat bringing spicy heat to the palate.
A hint of ash sticks around on the finish.
Very disappointed in this malt. Was hoping for a more sophisticated product from Edradour. This tastes more like Bell's or Grouse blend.
Beautiful nose of smoke and peat with some vanilla and almonds. Oily mouth feel with a smooth finish. Warmth without the burn of alcohol. It’s up there with Talisker & Lagavulin 16.
Dark notes of toffee and chocolate works really well with some peatiness. I wouldn't call this heavily peated though, and that's what i like about this, too much smokiness would have destroyed those dark notes.
Before the evening gets on and I move to my more heavily peated Islay’s, I find Ballechin to be the perfect stepping stone. I think others have described it well as not complex and not preten tious just the right peatiness to get you in the mood.
Good for a wee bit of a change to the Islay peat monsters. Lingering sweet vanilla smoke with a touch of fudge. Not complex but still a tasty glass.
