Edradour
Scotland
Single Malt
This is the core expression of 10 year old Ballechin single malt Scotch whisky, which is heavily peated whisky from Edradour. It has been named for the silent Ballechin distillery near the Edradour distillery. Releases under the Ballechin name from Edradour were previously presented as part of The Discovery Series, many of which were matured in different types of casks, including Sherry, bourbon and a selection of wine casks. This 10 year old expression, however, comes from a combination of ex-Oloroso Sherry and ex-bourbon casks.
Oily malt, whiffs of burnt ends and BBQ char, a few touches of apple and fig.
Chewy dates and oak, with smouldering peat bringing spicy heat to the palate.
A hint of ash sticks around on the finish.
Smokey and sweet. I love it.
If you are looking for an islay alternative, a 'peated highlander', or perhaps something like Benriach Septimus (peated speyside, and in my opinion the best) unfortunately what is actually in the bottle is near-as-dammit Ardbeg 10. Which is fine if ALL you look for is peat, but there is no subtlety, nothing to balance the peat - so what's the point? might as well stick your head over a bonfire. I would advise paying a bit more and getting Lagavulin 16, or the Benriach peated 17.
For the price you get exactly what they promise. Excellent balance between peat and salty sea waves. With water you get notes of almond and peach. I put this whisky between Ardbeg 10 and Ledaig 10. More peat than Ardbeg and less salt than Ledaig. This has become my everyday drum along with Ardbeg 10 and Rock Oyster. No need to say that if you don't like peat you should go for the Edradour. Much more intense than Laga in peat. Compared to Laphroaig you get less smoke. Give it a try.
Nice! Very smoky and sweet.
We find it smooth and little smoked (beetween Lagavulin and Talisker) Splendid single malt
