A younger, more intensely smoky version of Auld Reekie, The Big Smoke is an Islay malt whisky from Duncan Taylor, and it comes bottled at 46%, and 60%.
Hints of cool wood smoke, wet leaves and oak. Some sugared peels, almond, and salty notes. Peat, and vanilla.
Charcoal, caramel, smoked meat, peat smoke and dry oak. Hints of malty sweetness, with spice.
Long finish, notes of the coast, and wood ash.
I should preface this by saying that I practically drink nothing but peated whiskies and have tried the big names like Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Talisker etc... and how does this stack up? I would actually say it's better than all of them. As soon as I opened the bottle, I got strong, earthy smoke. It was very similar to a peat fire in your fireplace and in the glass, it smelled the same but with the addition of brown sugar old leather. The palate was almost identical but with even more smoke! It coats your whole mouth and the finish is exquisite. It's so long and if you leave your mouth open, you can feel the smoke going around your mouth and it takes a while to fade! Without a doubt, buy a bottle of this or I might just get the last of them myself :)
Do not underestimate this tacky looking blend. It’s incredible. If you like smoky then this is a must. Enjoy!
WONDERFUL!!! I WANT MORE
This is a great smokey, peaty malt with smooth texture and burn with the additional flavours of caramel sweet and oak. In my opinion, it's even better than the Laphroaig 10 and QC because of its bold smokey roundness and the flavours of the blends. While I love a great smokey malt, I find that I can't go more than two, whereas the non-smokey, non-peaty malts leave me wanting more smokey, peaty flavour. The Big Smoke is the perfect answer to my appetite for peat, smoke and flavour. Sometimes the Islays can be a one trick pony - a great one trick mind you, but this Islay blend is fantastic!
