An easygoing sipper from Deanston, this single malt was matured in a combination of first and second-fill ex-bourbon barrels. Filtered for a soft, buttery profile, it ought to work rather well as an alternative to bourbon in all kinds of classic cocktails.
Toffee and toasted oak are followed by honeyed fruits and vanilla pod.
Peppery spice and creamy barley tangle, with buttered toast and hints of green oak.
Stone fruits with drizzles of runny honey, mellow vanilla, and delicate oak.
A decent bottle although not the Deanston I have known over the years. A liitle sweet but not too much, some bourbon but only a little and a bit too spirity to be real quality. Nevertheless it is value for money
I took a punt on this version of Deanston for two reasons; the need for a credible budget whisky option and the known pedigree and quality of a Deanston single malts. This Kentucky cask matured offering is available for not a lot of money. I found the nose distinctly Deanston, the palette is quite pleasant and promised more; mouthfeel is also acceptable, but of course it lacks the oomph of an integrity strength of 46.3% ABV (as per its big brother). As expected for a non-aged statement / 40% whisky, the finish was a short one however, the overall impression after a few neck pours is very positive for a single malt at a price point circa £20. My fear given that this is promoted as a Kentucky (i.e. bourbon) cask was that the whisky would be too sweet. I can assure you it is not so. Instead you get a recognisable Deanston profile, albeit one that doesn't linger. Would I buy again - yes. If you want an easy going pre-dinner aperitif on a budget, the DKC ticks a box or two.
