A 2015 addition to the Deanston range, this expression has been matured for 18 years, including a finishing period in first-fill Kentucky bourbon casks. It was bottled without chill filtration at 46.3% ABV. Oodles of rich honey, luxurious vanilla, sugary shortbread and a touch of fresh ginger.
Enjoyable earthy vanilla up front, paired with Golden Grahams, honeydew melon and flint.
Lemon cheesecake and orange boiled sweets, shortly followed by stem ginger and beeswax.
Oily walnut and barley.

An absolute citrus bomb! Orange and Apricot dominate. Bottled with integrity at 46.3%, natural colour and without chill filtration. A highly accomplished malt from a distillery rapidly growing in stature.
AGE comes through well. OLD dusty wood, dry bark, oak nuts, chestnuts. Fresh red and yellow APPLES, juicy, clean, like in a young GLENGOYNE. Nectarines, dried pineapple. Raspberries. Tropical - mango, papaya. Coconut water. Slight banana note. Freshly pressed orange juice, blood oranges, orange peels, sweet tangerines. Lime juice and lime peels. Wild strawberries. Candied morello cherries. Black currants. Brambles (Blackberries). Soft marzipan in the back of it. Vanilla pod. With aeration, STAR ANISE. Very soft refreshing minerality. Earthy. Palate is sweet, fruity, and with a mild mature bitterness. Cardamon. Cinnamon. Slightly drying. Cocoa powder as it goes down. Fruitier than the 1''2, softer, and somewhat drier. Sweet, but does not have the caramel you find on the 1''2 ( vanilla, however, definitely ). The 1''8 furthermore lacks the certain barnyard funk I get in the 1''2. Short finish - Otherwise, this is ~ ~ Very solid.
Rich sappy goodness from the oak, augmenting Deanston's usual sweet and balanced malt. I agree with a previous reviewer that it is refreshing that this release is unaugmented by sherry casks or wine finishes, as the industry has come to rely on to sell older malts and all it often serves to do is homogenise and dumb down the end result. This is a belter of a dram and enjoyable in the same way as higher vintage Linkwoods, but with a rather more consistent cask policy to my tastes.

I was surprised on the first taste - but I think I'm just used to older whiskys being finished in sherry casks. Just a drop of water really does open this one up.
