Dalwhinnie
Scotland
Single Malt
Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold is a 2015 addition to the Highland distillery's range inspired by the chilly climate up in the remote part of Scotland where their single malt Scotch whisky is distilled - as the label remarks, it was "Crafted by the Cold". It's made only with spirit that has been distilled between October and March, and interestingly enough, they suggest that you try serving this expression frozen!
Oak spice, pear skins, golden syrup and gristy malt. A touch of peach polish and chewy, sticky toffee. From the freezer it's fruitier, more green apple, apple sauce, toffee apple, sultana, even redcurrant.
Very honeyed with warming peppery spices, Big Red cinnamon. From the freezer the honey is kept in check much more, as are the spices. Plenty of apple flesh and orange peel.
Allspice, nutmeg and smoky malt. From the freezer the finish is more about the spicy cinnamon and peppercorn heat that's found on the palate at room temperature.
An assertive, spicy, honeyed Dalwhinnie with enough sweetness and character to be served straight from the freezer (as intended).
This was a drinkable whisky. Then I thought I'd just give it a go and freeze it as Dalwhinnie recommended. Worst whisky ever when frozen. The 15 Year Old is great, this is worth avoiding.
Diageo are so out of touch with today's whiskey drinkers if they think that chilling a single malt, adding dye (E150a), and chill-filtering are the ways to go. It is no wonder that Winter's Gold is highly discounted at many retailers along with the plethora of their other no ag statement sub-standard malts. Come on Diageo you can do much better than this!
Thought I’d give it a go, wish I hadn’t. £25 deal at Tesco so not too bad but if I’d paid full price I’d be fuming. Got a nice peppery tickle at first but then the weird taste kicked in....I can’t describe it but it’s not pleasant. This gives way to a decent marzipan and cinnamon taste that unfortunately doesn’t last long. Not impressed with NAS whiskies. Only decent one I’ve tried so far is Cardhu which is far superior to this one. Plenty of other better deals at the shops than this.
A totally confusing dram at the beginning. Out the bottle the mouthfeel is bland and the balance of elements is confusingly muddled. However a little time in glass and it opens up more. Spices, Pepper and Cinnamon. A pleasant Alcohol burn at 43% ABV. Creamy mouthfeel and a warmness needed on a winters eve. The length disperses too quickly though and no Christmas Pudding or candied fruits. Difficult to understand what it’s trying to do. OK as the Whisky base for cocktails but an expensive one.
It is what is is. Cheap. So don't expect anything. Spend more and you get more. This whisky is appreciated by non connoisseurs. And tried by persons who want to buy quality by persons who should know better. ! With kind regards Albert from the Netherlands. By the way buy at this site the best you can afford. ! You only live once. ;-)
