Dalmore Cigar Malt was discontinued in mid-2009, causing quite an uproar indeed. The whiskies used for the reworked version were actually slightly older, but naturally still pair perfectly with a cigar.
It's a great whisky, whether you drink with its intended purpose in mind or not. And if you do enjoy cigars, you'll want to know that the stick that provided the flavour benchmark for pairing is the hefty Partagas Serie D No. 4.
Caramel, shortbread, biscuits, coffee and chocolates. Simple, clean and moreish.
Yet more toffee, caramel edging towards the burnt cinder-toffee side of things. Flamed orange-zest, and perfectly integrated sherry.
Reasonably simple, Christingles (orange Zest and clove with a touch of cinnamon), more mid-palate than palate-coating.
Definitely meets the criteria of pairing with a ‘BIG’ cigar.

I never really developed a taste for Scotch, but the first time I had the Cigar Malt, it got my attention!
I don't smoke cigars but I really enjoy this single malt. It has a profile that is very much Dalmore but is distinctly different from the 15 yr or 18 yr expressions or King Alexander III. Amazing nose with hints of leather, tobacco leaves, and fine sherried oak. Cabernet savignon finnishing really adds an extra layer of luxury to the nose. The palate is full and luxurious with chocolate, dried fruit, sherried oak (but the sweetness is mild, barley-driven). The finish is long and warm with more chocolate, dried fruit, and the pleasant dried, deep oak. This is one of Richard Patterson's finest creations.
Regardless if you like a cigar or not if you like wine then it's a fantastic dram
I have a bottle of the original pre 2009 cigar malt that I haven't opened yet. Not a fan of this newer version but I wasn't that keen on the original either simply because I felt it was less subtle than my usual favourites although I know there are some serious fans out there and it deserved recognition for offering something very different. I did also find that the original was much better towards the end of a heavy evening when subtlety has gone by the wayside. I'm giving it a 3 although the original got 4 from me as I could see why that one appealed to people after a heavier whisky.
Interesting taste and it was good.
