A peaty blended malt created by the renowned John Glaser, of Compass Box. The Peat Monster contains malt whiskies from the legendary Isle of Islay, along with a helping of Highland malt in there too. The result is richly smoky, with underlying hints of fruit and oak. Also, the the monster on the label looks like it's seen something particularly scary, which begs the question: what's scary to a monster...?
Peat, marked salinity, leans to Caol Ila in style, something medicinal. Sweet and fruity, grainy.
Peat, oak. Botanicals, floral, coppery, sweet, smoky bacon, hint of papaya.
A lingering sweetness, more peat, floral: roses and violets, sweet spice, oak.
Smoky. But in an unconventional way. Bruichladdich-style Islay peat is present, but there's other stuff. Definitely medicinal, iodine, fine alcohol. Smells like a hospital. But the fruit and sweetness is so strong that they mix and go together. Some yeastiness. Something murky, rotten, but alive. Black olive brine. It smells like death. Flowers a cemetery. Apples, peaches and apricots. Getting rotten. We measure things with contrast, but contradiction is magic.
Brilliant whisky that was wonderfully complex ! My 1st experience nosing was that of a leather tannery, while my 1st taste was a strong peaty smoke explosion of flavors and the Sea. I found that 1st taste almost overpowering -and like the magic it is -it only got smoother by the sip.. Great fond memories of this one.. A1 :)
I can't even begin to describe. It's smells vile. And as for the taste. Wow. Boot wash or sheep dip is probably my closest description. Absolutely awful I've drank many drinks but wow this takes the biscuit for the worst thing I've ever tasted. Never again. I can still taste it after 2 other drinks after !
Wonderfully smokey and smooth. A real winner for me.
I love this dram. You must have this in collection if you are an Islay fan
