Compass Box's delicious Spice Tree was briefly illegitimate, according to SWA regulations. After adjusting its creation, Spice Tree is back, and better than ever. It's a blended malt made from Highland malt whiskies, aged in specially made casks with new French oak heads.
In April 2015, it was named Best Blended Malt Scotch at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Fragrant and aromatic with notes of dried herbs, spices, oak and vanilla. Has a bourbon note to it and a peppery tang.
Gingernut biscuits, toffee spices, herbal, vanilla, very rich and peppery.
Very spicy, big and rich.
I was tasting a few scotches last night and Spice Tree really had me doing a double-take, like "Where did this come from?" This is a very flavorful, and playful, blend that I was quite taken with. I might not drink this every day, but it sure would be a lot of fun to share with my scotch drinking friends - quite a great melange of flavors.
At first I wasn't blown away by this. Felt it was all wood and oak and not much else. However after about a month of being opened the wood notes dissipated and I could then see what the fuss was about. This is a very well constructed blend and offers something completely different to 95% of Scotch. For anyone with experience of Rye whisky will love this as it has those hallmarks of ginger, cumin, nutmeg etc. The finish has all the malts fighting for your attention but you get the waxiness from Clynelish as a dominant note. I shall replenish once the Winter arrives again as its heavy, rich character is more appropriate for the colder months.
VANILLA AND HERBS FOLLOWED BY LOTS OF SPICES. THIS HAS A NICE LONG FINISH AND IS IMPROVED IMO BY A SPLASH OF O2. VERY GOOD BLEND. STRUTH
Nose: Spice d'uh. Slightly aged cut wood. Palate: Initial sweet fruits giving way to musk...vanilla and softest toffee. After: Cinnamon glides expertly for an unexpected distance.
Wow.. Compass box definitely know how to do a blend,,don't really bother much with blends but so glad I tried this spice tree, just changed with every mouthful.. They have made something very special with this one..
