A coastal and peaty single malt, the flagship expression from Clynelish boasts a fabulous flavour profile filled with its distinctive waxy notes. Clynelish is the successor to Brora which closed in 1983, which it is built opposite. A well rounded Highlander, though this expression is a bit less peaty than the Brora bottlings of yore.
Zesty, mandarin, tangerine. Smoky.
Quite light, great clarity. Orange, soft acidity. Dry oak. Mixed fruits, vanilla, leather.
Quite long, bitter sweetness developing, spicy oak.
Probably a bit too sophisticated for me It does seem a bit better after leaving it for a couple of weeks . Can now taste the slight peat flavour Purchased this as other bottles were £100++ and I thought that was too much to pay . Even this IS expensive . I'm sure I've had a cheap blended bottle of Scotch that tasted like this so must find it . Pleasant but overpriced ( over-hyped )
As Ralfy said, somebody who’s blinging it will go for Macallan, somebody who’s winging it will go for Talisker, but somebody who’s sophisticating it will go for Clynelish. This is great reliable whisky. Complex nose and taste dominated but not overwhelmingly so by butterscotch. This is a distinctive whisky with a nice grown up muskiness. If I had to choose a whisky quickly it would either be Arran Quarter Cask or this. Highly recommended.
I breathed this for 6 days then had it neat in a burgunder and a Glencairn. I strongly suspect these casks have been used at least twice, possibly three times as there is precious little to show for 14 years in a barrel. This is disappointingly thin and harsh. “Flagship Expression”? Don’t insult my intelligence. I despair at the state of the Scottish whisky industry. I now mostly drink Cognac and Bourbon because of this
Nice, sherried coastal Highlands scotch. You can only taste the peat if you concentrate on it. Great, complex flavour, definitely get the zest and waxiness. Long finish. I have mine sometimes with 1/3 of a teaspoon of Laphroaig to add the peatiness to it (trust me). Great whisky and I recommended it - the only shame it is owned by greedy company such as Diageo.
Someone said "Feels just like another chill filtered..." - you do realise that chill filtering cannot be detected via taste, and nobody can detect a chill filtered vs non chill filtered whisky in blind tasting? Stop falling for marketing rubbish, especially foreign people outside of Scotland. They put "non chill filtered" on the label to increase the price. That is all.
