Caperdonich 18 Year Old Peated - Secret Speyside Collection

Peated single malt from the closed Caperdonich Distillery, released as part of the Secret Speyside Collection. This particular expression was matured for 18 years in American oak barrels before being bottled up at 48% ABV. Chivas' Secret Speyside Collection was created to show off and celebrate some distilleries that you hear much from. A commendable mission!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Apricot and flamed orange peel, with muted smoke wafting in behind layers of toffee.

    Palate

Fiery peat builds, supported by toasted brown sugar and more dried fruit.

    Finish

    Slightly buttery and savoury.

Superb Dram. Once it's Gone it's Gone

Review #1 Caperdonich 18 peated speyside single malt. (2002) Disclaimer: My very first review. This is a bottling of Caperdonich 18 from the now destroyed Caperdonich distillery. It has an interesting history. It was founded in 1898 and ran until 1902 where it was mothballed until 1965 where Glenlivet bought and re-opened the distillery. It was then sold to Seagram who held it until 2001 where pernod ricard purchased the distillery and closed it only a year later. Sadly this was right before the scotch boom. It was located next to the glen grant distillery. ABV: 48% Nose: Overwhelming Smokiness, Peat, Oak, Vanilla, Spice Palate: Medium/Long mouthfeel, Overwhelming Smokiness, Peat, Oak, Spice Finish: Long length finish, Overwhelming Smoky notes, Peat, Ending with oak Value: At a cost of £119.99. This is not the greatest value dram I've had but it's unique and once it's gone it's gone. 8/10 Rating: 91/100 This is a very solid smoky dram. Overpowers the peat massively and adds a lot of character. The peat isn't super strong like a port charlotte or ledaig but the way it comes on really adds to the palate. Nice maltiness in there as well. Overall a very solid dram and one I would highly recommend. But it is on the higher side of pricing for an 18 year old scotch.

    Almost perfect!

Sipping this beauty is like a dream

Quite glorious and sadly we'll see no more...

N: Supreme putrid peat presence. P: Refreshing orange fruits give way to thinly peppered melon. Wow. Wow. A: A phenolic taint slips in alongside middling sherbet that tastes orange throughout in a lengthy closing performance.

    Excellent

Absolutely loving Int this whisky. Bought 2 as an exploration and not disappointed.
