The Distillers Edition series sees some spectacular whisky double matured in specially paired wine-finished casks. This Caol Ila joins the 2022 collection, and the smoky Islay single malt has been matured in moscatel seasoned American oak casks, lending a sweet complexity to the powerful, coastal character.
Waves of coastal peat, with damp ashes, and subtle hints of dried apricot.
The full flavoured smoke has a sweeter edge tending more towards barbecue smoke, with some pepper and cinnamon alongside.
Lovely and smoky.

I am enjoying the Distillers Edition. The finishing in the sherry oak dies add a definite sweetness to usual Islay smokiness, and softened the edges. Have bought two more
A non-age statement whisky at 12 yr old pricing. Curiously, it is both harsh in the nose and mellow to the point of weak in taste, at least initially. Peppery after-taste. Maybe the bottle needs to breathe a bit, but its blandness combined with a slightly sweet nose does not bode well. Glad I did not pay full price.
