Indie bottler Berry Bros. & Rudd cracked open a splendid cask of Caol Ila single malt for this offering. Distilled in 2010, the whisky spent a decade maturing, including a finishing period in an ex-vin santo wine cask, yielding a total of 277 bottles when it was opened in 2022.
The sweet wine cask brings notes of tropical fruits, and baking spice, intertwining with plenty of coastal smoke.
A good helping of fruit balances the hearty peat smoke with spiced fruit cake and notes of candied pineapple. Salted chocolate joins in time, with dates and dried orange beneath.
Layers of seaside smoke and bonfire embers mingle with juicy dried fruits, sweet and zesty, with warming spice on the tail.

There are only 277 bottles of this, so please don’t buy it - I want it all to myself. If you are looking for something very different and for special occasions then this is it. You can really taste the vin santo influence, which adds so much more depth and complexity to the flavours. Have no doubt, it’s still a peaty Smokey whisky, with all the best Islay has to offer, but integrated so well with the sweet fruity flavours you won’t find anywhere else. So don’t buy it. Please.
