A beautiful Caol Ila from Gordon and MacPhail. This was distilled in 1997 and it was aged for a decade in bourbon casks before a 30 month finish in Hermitage wine casks (a classic French red made using Syrah grapes). Very fruity and at 45% it has plenty of body.
Thick and spicy with notes of ginger, hints of salty butter, stewed fruits, damson jam, black pepper, truffle oil and a little strawberry conserve on toast.
Rich and full with notes of gingerbread, spices and hints of peat smoke. It also offers a marvellous salinity, alongside all kinds of desiccated fruits, nutmeg and malt.
Good length with plenty of malt and spice. Hints of plum jam on the tail.
