An Islay classic that we will never get enough of. Caol Ila 12 year old is the entry-level bottling from the Caol Ila distillery, launched in June of 2002. Caol Ila is the largest of the Islay distilleries by output and so it’s a favourite of brands, independent bottlers, and blends like Johnnie Walker.
Caol Ila 12 Year Old appeals to connoisseurs while also making the perfect entry to the world of peated whisky for newcomers, with its beautifully measured and mellow smokiness and a rich array of seaside flavours. It’s a serial award-winner that works great in cocktails (we recommend a smoky Highball), as well as being a good whisky to pair with salty and savoury foods.
Fresh, herbal. Rubbed peppermint leaves, stemmy, damp grass, smoky. Oily, cigar leaves, smoked ham, hickory. Lemon peels at the harbour.
Good body, oily, tar, elegant smoke. Hints of boiled sweets.
Long, peppery, spicy warmth, smoke.
I have just returned from a shopping trip to Harrods London. Where I was introduced to this. amazing whiskey. By an Amazing waitress in the bar there. Myself and friends asked what do you recommend. A good whiskey. She said ok . Leave it with me. Came back to our table. With a double each. We was blown away by this. And we had another 3 each. I will be drinking this for years to come. With a good cigar. PaulR. UK.
Excellent quality Islay malt, with integrated smoke, citrus and a long peppery finish.
A terrific whiskey with plenty of body and richness. Intensely smokey on the nose, palette and finish but never sickening. A new favourite and well earned reputation as quintessential Islay.
Given that it is twenty or more years since I purchased Scottish whiskey ,three years Irish! this was a pleasant reminder of that smoking peat that makes Scottish whiskey from the Islands unique.
The best Islay whisky for me. This has a good balance of flavours and that includes the peat. I used to drink Talisker Storm but Coal Ila has the edge - better quality and more rounded edges. One of the best whiskies under £40. Wonderful smokiness.
